The use of our land, everyone’s land, must be taken with social, environmental and economic responsibility. The agroecological approach is in accordance with these principles.
Agroecology is a practice as old as agriculture itself. It is a science that brings together the contributions of different scientific, ecological and social disciplines. It integrates and applies traditional knowledge and local cultural practices of farmers to design and manage sustainable, diversified, resilient, healthy and economically viable productive agroecosystems, with the aim of achieving food sovereignty and social justice.
Agroecology is a local/zonal approach; regulations cannot be issued for agroecological cultivation, but the criteria and central ideas are established: protection of the health of the ecosystem and its inhabitants. Each system is unique and is worked as such.

The dairy team is co-creating knowledge from the transdisciplinarity of which producers, anthropologists, veterinarians and agronomists participate; to provide more tailored responses to each particular system and generate useful information for technicians and producers who feel like embarking on a transition towards agroecology, thus generating a more harmonious coexistence with the environment of which we are part.

We accompany a group of livestock producers who have a rational grazing system, located in Colonia and San José. Through meetings in the establishments, the properties are toured and set-ups are carried out. It is noteworthy that new participants interested in the topic always attend. There is active participation from the agricultural economics and administration group of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (University of the Republic).

A demonstration agroecological farm operates, seeking a more sustainable form of production. On our property we have a dairy that produces organic milk, dulce de leche and agroecological cheeses; a fruit farm that produces sweet fruit trees and seasonal fruits; agroecological gardens and greenhouses that produce seasonal vegetables; and an agricultural-livestock rotation that produces food for the entire year.
